The MGC New Years Eve celebrations were great, 123 people attended on the night. We had a 'rent a chef' who was pretty good, you have to give him credit for standing in at the last moment. My mum came to the evening (see photo below), she was alittle overwhelmed because she had not been to a golf club social event before but thoroughly enjoyed the event and everyone made her very welcome - thanks to everyone who took time out to say Hi to my mum.
At 10.30p.m. (approx) was the official handover ceremony, I had read the procedure twice so had a rough idea of what I had to do and when and I also had written a short speech. The ceremony went pretty well, Bernard Stone, the new Captain gave a short speech, Elaine gave me the Lady Captains badge and in turn I managed not to stab Kim with the VC badge (phew). Unfortunately, a step in the procedure was overlooked and I didnt get the chance to make a speech. I am sure I will get plenty of opportunities throughout the year !
The singer on the night had a fantastic voice - much better than that rubbish on the X Factor and then just after midnight, I had to get my golf shoes on and hit a ball off the 1st tee (whites)......I am not sure what Bernard was doing but it took him a few minutes to get to the tee. I then awarded him a 2 shot penalty for being so late, maybe he was in the nets warming up ?
Bernard had asked me not to outdrive him on the night and said that it would be the only occassion that he would be able to hit a ball out of sight ! We synchronised our swings and then hit the ball, my ball went at least 200 yards down the middle of the fairway (well that's what I visualised anyhow) and Bernard said he did a 'Power fade', loosly translated I think that meant that the ball probably landed on the 18th green (don't tell Bernard that though).
The fireworks were great and after a long evening of eating, drinking and a quick dance, I retired for the evening in shock that I was now the Lady Captain of Manchester Golf Club.
I apologise for the quality of the photos, Phil says my camera is rubbish !
